Heian
"Heian" in Japanese means peace or tranquility. The Heian period (794-1185) in Japanese history was a time when Chinese influences -including the art of bonsai- were strongest.
Bonsai Garden
Made with two layers of sterling silver, using a technique called "fretwork" which consists in cutting out a shape with a saw.

The two pendants were cut from the same piece of silver.
This style of bonsai is called "formal upright style."
The trunk and branches of the tree are etched and darkened with liver of sulfur.
Etching gives depth to the piece.
Literally "plant in a pot", bonsai is the ancient art of growing miniature trees.

Shinto ("way of the Gods") is a spirituality of Japan and its people based on the worship of nature and the importance of souls. Shinto shrines serve as a bond between people and Kami (spirits).
Dai Kichi (good fortune scroll)
"Omikuji" are fortune-telling scrolls that reveal a blessing. These predictions are a popular activity related to visiting shrines.
"Dai Kichi" means great blessing.

Akihabara
Akihabara -or "Akiba"- is a district in central Tokyo that is famous for its electronics shops. It has become over the past few years a centre of "otaku" culture, with a large number of stores offering vidoe games, manga and animation-related goods.

The sword is cut from a strip of sterling silver,
The piece is varnished and the design is etched in nitric acid.
The designs are cut and the sword polished.
Parts of the sword are darkened with liver of sulfur to contrast with the polished silver.
